The Expert Network celebrates its newest member, Attorney David A. Attisani

David A. Attisani, Co-chairman, Insurance & Reinsurance Group, Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP, has joined The Expert Network, an invitation-only service for distinguished professionals. Mr. Attisani has been chosen as a Distinguished Lawyer™ based on peer reviews and ratings, dozens of recognitions, and accomplishments achieved throughout his career.

Mr. Attisani outshines others in his field due to his extensive educational background, numerous awards and recognitions, and career longevity. He received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 1991 from Harvard Law School and his Bachelor of Arts in English, magna cum laude, in 1987 from Williams College where he was included in the Phi Beta Kappa honors society. Among numerous other honors, Mr. Attisani was the first-ever Boston-area attorney to be recognized in the Chambers USA nationwide rankings for Insurance and Reinsurance from 2014 to 2016 and was also named one of Law360's "10 Most Admired Insurance Attorneys in America" for 2010, out of 1,016 nominations from 100 firms. Further, Mr. Attisani is one of only twelve reinsurance lawyers listed in The 2015 Legal 500’s elite “Leading Lawyers” category, a designation he also received in 2012 and 2011.

"When I started twenty odd years ago, the insurance coverage business and reinsurance business were driven by asbestos, pollution, and healthcare losses. There were many big pollution cases, and asbestos was, of course, the scourge of the industry for decades. But since then, the panorama of risks has broadened widely. In the last year or so, I have had an oil pipeline case involving an engineering problem that took me to Istanbul this past fall, a case related to Obamacare that took me to Los Angeles, and multiple variable annuities cases on the East Coast."

With 25 years dedicated to law, Mr. Attisani brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular to his area of specialization, insurance and reinsurance litigation and arbitration. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in law, Mr. Attisani said:

"When I was growing up in suburban New York, we had a neighbor who had gone to Williams who was a litigator in New York City. He became a friend and mentor, and of course, when I got into Williams there was a closer connection. I would say that was certainly one of the inspirational moments in my past."

As a leader in his field, Mr. Attisani is widely regarded as an intellectual authority in insurance law. He has been quoted in various trade publications and has written several articles on a wide range of topics within insurance law, including articles on hydrofracking, construction, as well as litigation proceedings. He is the 2012 reinsurance editor of the Appleman Insurance treatise and has served on the faculty at ARIAS-US, the Excess & Surplus Lines Claims Association (now, IACP), and other leading trade associations for the insurance and reinsurance arbitration industry. Additionally, his deep knowledge of his specialty has earned him a co-chairman position on the ABA’s Reinsurance Subcommittee as well as the ARIAS-US Education Committee.

This prominence in insurance law allows Mr. Attisani to keep his finger on the pulse of new developments in the legal landscape that could alter prospects for his clients. In particular, he has been paying close attention to the diversifying array of risks, a trend that he notes has greatly changed the way he has operated his practice:

"When I started twenty odd years ago, the insurance coverage business and reinsurance business were driven by asbestos, pollution, and healthcare losses. There were many big pollution cases, and asbestos was, of course, the scourge of the industry for decades. But since then, the panorama of risks has broadened widely. In the last year or so, I have had an oil pipeline case involving an engineering problem that took me to Istanbul this past fall, a case related to Obamacare that took me to Los Angeles, and multiple variable annuities cases on the East Coast."

Mr. Attisani is a member of the American Bar Association, AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society (ARIAS-US), the Association of Bermuda Insurers & Reinsurers (ABIR), and the Excess & Surplus Lines Claims Association (now, IACP). He also volunteers with the American Heart Association.
