"I feel privileged to be practicing at a time when endoscopy and laparoscopy are intersecting to create a whole new field of surgical endoscopy, where the only limit is your imagination. These techniques are inevitably going to require, a combined endoscopic - surgical fellowship in the future. This is already beginning to happen in many surgical programs of leading academic institutions."

Steven A. Gorcey, M.D., Chief of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Monmouth Medical Center

With 25 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Gorcey brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, gastroenterology.

Dr. Gorcey is the senior and founding partner of Monmouth Gastroenterology, a division of Allied Digestive Health LLC, and currently serves as the Chief of the division of Gastroenterology at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey. In addition, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Drexel University Medical school. Dr. Gorcey also has attending privileges and is active at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

As a thought-leader in his field, Dr. Gorcey is renowned for his use of cutting-edge techniques in Gastroenterology. While routine Colon Cancer Screening and Upper Endoscopy comprise the majority of his practice, he also has special interests in some of the most advanced endoscopic procedures performed in the world today. When asked about some of these techniques, Dr. Gorcey said:

"I am using several advanced techniques that most of my colleagues are not trained for. I'm actually now three years into it, and I'm starting to see a lot of tertiary referrals from other gastroenterologists, which is the ultimate compliment. I have had great success is removing very large pre-cancerous lesions from the Gastrointestinal tract that others have not been able to remove, saving patients from much more invasive surgical resections. I am also presently the only physician performing POEM for Achalasia in the state of New Jersey and most currently the first in the region to place intragastric balloons endoscopically for weight loss."

Dr. Gorcey’s leadership in Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopy gives him a unique position from which to rapidly adopt new technologies and developing trends in the field, particularly procedures performed in tandem with laparoscopic surgeons. He noted:

"I feel privileged to be practicing at a time when endoscopy and laparoscopy are intersecting to create a whole new field of surgical endoscopy, where the only limit is your imagination. These techniques are inevitably going to require, a combined endoscopic - surgical fellowship in the future. This is already beginning to happen in many surgical programs of leading academic institutions."

Dr. Gorcey is a member of the the American Society for Gastro-intestinal Endoscopy, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and Society of American Gastroenterological and Surgical Endoscopy. He has received numerous awards and recognitions over the course of his career, including the Patients' Choice Award and the Compassionate Doctor Recognition in 201, and the On-Time Doctor Award in 2014 from Vitals.

Dr. Gorcey has lectured on many occasions to the SGNA (Society of Gastroenterological nurses association), and recently to the Southern Jersey Gastroenterology Club on the POEM procedure. He is well published and was the first in the world to describe the ex-vivo human stomach model to practice advanced endoscopic techniques.
